History of Zion's Music Program

Zion Lutheran Church in Iowa City, IA, a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, is looking for both a Minister of Music and an Adult & Youth Choir Director.

Zion is an active congregation of over 900 members, with a strong history of proclaiming the word of God through music and glorifying God with instruments and song.  Ours is a music ministry that grows out of Lutheran liturgical and acapella traditions. We want to continue to honor this musical heritage while also being more inclusive of worshipers who may at times want more variety in musical expression.

Adult involvement in the music ministry is strong, but we could always find room for an increased number of participants.  At the same time, we want to increase the involvement of our youth, given our belief that music provides a foundation for Christian formation and growth. We are looking for a Minister of Music and a Director of the Adult and Youth Choirs who can help us more effectively, through music, meet the spiritual needs of worshipers across the spectrum of ages, and can guide us in choosing excellent music, whatever the genre, to support an inspiring and welcoming worship experience.

Our music ministry at present includes two volunteer adult choirs (one including 50+ members; the other, Kleiner Chor, a self-directed group of 10-12 singers), three children’s choirs with from 27 to 35 members total, a 13-member adult bell choir, a brass group of 10-12 musicians, an 8-member flute choir, and an inter-generational Advent band/orchestra, typically of 40-45 members. Our congregation includes a number of professional musicians and many avid amateurs, who provide music for various services throughout the year, including the summer months.
